Game Viewing in Rwanda

Game viewing is one of the activities which offer visitors an opportunity to spot many animals. The activity is carried out any time of year but it needs proper planning for an excellent tourism experience. Game viewing in Rwanda is mainly done in one of its Savannah parks, Akagera National park.

Akagera National Park

The park is located in the eastern side of  Rwanda along the border with Tanzania. The protected area was named after the Kagera River which flows along its eastern boundary. Akagera National Park  is characterized by a diverse mix of savannah, woodland, wetlands, and a string of lakes that create a rich and varied ecosystem. The park covers an area of 1122 sq km and is one of the closest wildlife parks to the country’s national airport—Kigali International Airport, approximately 3-hour drive from the airport.

Akagera National Park was established in 1934 but due to genocide in 1990s the park lost nearly two thirds of its land. The park hosts the big fives and other notable animals like; Giraffes, zebras, impalas, topis, eland, bushbucks, Warthogs, hippos, crocodiles, Spotted hyenas, side-striped jackals, baboons, and vervet monkeys. Akagera National Park is a home to 500 bird species like Shoebill stork, African fish eagle, papyrus gonolek, grey-crowned crane, Goliath heron, Jacanas, kingfishers, and weavers.
